Potential Open Source Tribe Manipulation ...Having read the article below it has raised a thought that I have had for quite a while. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on it? I see Open Source software getting developed by people for free, in their own time and for good reasons. I have also contributed back in the past. However, what is it with this work then being sold? My concern is that ownership of a community based entity can be sold by the original members for profit and my question ... is this not just a modern day version of tribe manipulation ?Am I just being cynical here but could it possibly be that the underlying truth in the Open Source movement(s) is/are not what developers want to hear or are lead to believe? Are we in denial or being naive and simply following? Are we passionate enough about doing something that we do not see the shepherd and the wolves? Obviously there are many different types of licenses, projects etc etc etc and that is not really my point. Though probably quite relevant. However something just does not smell right. Why is it that some of the greatest advocates of open source have ties to some of largest retainers of commercial propriety software? Interesting. The obvious most prominent and recent events come in the form of what Oracle will do with MySQL or Java for that matter. What the new owners do with them may not be as fundamentally important as to how they got hold of them in the first place. Apple / BSD, RedHat / JBoss, RedHat / Linux and many many others. How many years ago was it that reverse engineering was so prevalent in the industry. Defining right or wrong though is not my point.
